An Introduction to Computer Viruses and Anti-Viruses

Computers and viruses have become synonymous with each other. A computer virus is similar to a biological virus in its construction. It is a malicious program that comes embedded in software or Internet files that gets ensconced in other machines. It then replicates itself and starts infecting the host machine. Some viruses only affect their area of infection while others are potent enough to destroy entire servers of a large organization.

The first computer virus was invented by a Pakistani duo of brothers in 1986, who spread it using floppy discs. Internet was in the nascent stages at that time and very few people had access to it. Floppies were the most commonly used item and the virus managed to reach important locations including the Pentagon in the United States.   Viruses continued relying on floppy discs for transmission until the Internet became commonplace. Hackers found it easier to transmit files on the Internet as it was cheaper and they were able to send viruses to a large number of people. Email attachments were and remain the most common route of entry. Viruses get attached themselves to file sent on the email. People download the files and the virus also find its way into the computer. It then starts replicating and the computer becomes infected.

The growth of the Internet has enhanced viral threats. They now come in every shape and size and in every type of file. You can get a virus during a chat message or while downloading a movie. The only way of avoiding an infection is to install anti-viral programs on your computer. A good antivirus program can stop a virus in its track and keep your computer safe from infection. It can also disarm a virus that is already present in your system.   Computer viruses are a deadly phenomenon. Staying alert and browsing the Internet with security filters will improve your chances of staying free of a viral infection. It’s highly advised to have an updated version of anti-virus running on your computer. There are plenty of such software if one searches on the net but Bit Defender is one the best software to take care virus.
