Random-access Memory, is a type of data storage medium

RAM, or Random-access Memory, is a type of data storage medium. It is a volatile medium, which means that the data is lost if the power source is removed. RAM is widely used in the computing industry and a computer’s performance directly depends on the size and type of RAM. RAM was first developed in the 1940s. Improvements were made in the subsequent years and RAM became an integral part of computers in the 1970s and 1980s.

It is called random-access because the data can be accessed in any order. RAM comes in two main types. SRAM or Static Random-access Memory, stores every bit of data in a flip-flop format. SRAM is expensive to produce but uses less power and makes for an excellent cache memory. DRAM, or Dynamic Random-access Memory stores a bit of data in a memory cell, which comprises of a transistor and a capacitor. This uses more power than SRAM though it is much cheaper than the latter. That’s why DRAM is the prevalent memory used in computers around the world.

The RAM acts as the data storage and retrieval platform on which the computer relies for smooth operations. It ensures that the data is secure and retrievable as long as the power connections are not lost. The RAM loses data in case of a severed power connection. This volatility, however, has not stalled its popularity.

RAM is the standard memory because it offers a swift response. A computer’s memory is calculated by taking into account the RAM capacity, which is also known as virtual memory, as well as the size of the scratch partition. The latter is a small part of the hard drive that is set aside for the purpose of creating computer memory.

Although volatile, RAM performs efficiently under normal conditions. You may need a new RAM in case the present one has developed faults. This will, however, be an economical process especially if you are buying DRAMs.
